Mothering Sunday predates US Mother's Day by several centuries. It originated as a day when servants were given leave to visit their 'mother church' (the parish where they were baptized) and, by extension, their families. The modern UK and Ireland observance overlaps with the US Mother's Day in spirit (gifts, cards, lunch out) but the date is fixed by the church calendar, not the second Sunday of May. In 2026 it fell on March 22.
